Fast-paced and sophisticated technological advancements make it easy for internet users, both children and adults, to be pampered by the benefits of the rise of technology, particularly social media. The good benefits provided by the introduction of social media make it simpler for users to socialize remotely, making it easier for internet users to meet all of their basic tasks, and even don't hesitate to exceed usage limitations, reducing productivity time.
"The key to future success depends on our daily behavior," James Clear once said in his book ‘Atomic Habits’ in the midst of an easy and lavish existence, we sometimes get confused and prefer to consume everything without knowing what is truly required, causing us to fall into the losers category.
Everything that incorporates the word "Israf" is harmful for our quality of life, according to Islamic teachings. It is explained in Surah Al-A'Raf (7:31) that said
“... and don't overdo it. Verily, Allah does not like those who are extravagant.” (Surat al-A'Raf (7):31).
In Surah Al-Ashr, it has also been mentioned many times by Allah SWT to always use our time usefully both in this world and in the hereafter.
- For the sake of time.
- Verily, man is truly in loss.
- Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds and advise one another to obey the truth and exhort one another to stick to the truth (Surah Al-'Ashr)
As for the lessons we can take from Surah Al-Ashr, they include not wasting time and lowering a Muslim's quality of life.
Consequently, how do we improve our own quality of life in the face of blind consumerism that has infiltrated our daily lives? The first step is to cut back on excessive use of social media. This is not simple, especially for social media users who consider their cellphones and social media to be second nature. When comparing the two options, executing work is easier than skating on social media, but as a qualified Muslim, we must also know what is good and what is evil, especially in terms of obligation. Many studies have indicated that the tendency to spend time on social media has a negative impact on mental and physical health. There are various simple techniques that you may take to change your habits in your tendency to play social media, based on the high frequency results that arise due to the negative impacts of social media reliance.
- Stick to the detox plan for three weeks.
- Remotely disable social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the time being. Whether you're bored, try reading a book, or reading and practicing the Holy Qur’an.
- Once you can feel the benefits for at least three months, then delete the app if it is causing you too much trouble in order to improve your quality of life.
Use and consume what you need and want responsibly. Your life will be more productive, you will be more enthused about life, you will know your future goals, and you will stop comparing your own life to others, as a result of this social media detox exercise. We will be closer and more solemn in our dealings with Allah, so that we are always at ease in worshiping, practicing the virtues of qanaah and asceticism, and staying away from everything wahn, such as excessive love for the world.
